"I believe those officers probably restrained themselves," Robert Beck, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association, said Thursday. The beating of Steven House, 33, has prompted an investigation by the police department's internal affairs. Mayor Michael R. White also ordered a separate review by the city's prosecutor and his executive assistant. Police beat House with flashlights and a brick after he led them on a car chase Oct.

He said House's decision to flee in his car, attempt to run over officers with the car and then flee again on foot required the officers to respond the way they did. "I want people to know that these officers did what they could to protect themselves and protect the citizens," Beck said. "They did what was necessary." Zukerman disagreed, saying Beck's comments were "way out of line." "The only reason why he fled into the field is because the officers caused the flight," he said. "They fired 16 shots at his car.

He was attempting to get out of the line of fire I don't believe the citizens of Cleveland and Cuyahoga County would agree with Mr. Beck." A preliminary hearing is set for Dec. 1. Henderson Van Atta Johnston i Funeral Service wvm.HVJfuneralservice.com Dale T. Thompson Nov.
