Scales, 33, died about 4 p.m. in the intensive care unit of Owensboro-Daviess County Hospital. Howe said she died of severe head injuries. Scales had been involved in a Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal. He also built and flew airplanes, was a stockcar driver in the 1940s and 1950s, and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
