❤️ Why You Will Love This Creamy Chipotle Sauce Recipe

  • An easy chipotle sauce recipe made with only THREE simple ingredients!
  • Perfect for meal prep!
  • Versatile sauce to keep in the fridge to use on all your favorite dishes.
  • Homemade chipotle sauce made with Greek yogurt making it a healthier option to chipotle mayo!
  • A delicious smoky flavor that makes EVERYTHING taste better!

🌶️ What are Chipotle Peppers?

Chipotle peppers are actually smoked jalapeno peppers which infuses the chilies with a great smoky, spicy flavor. In this dip, the pepper adds umami richness to the flavor in addition to some spiciness.

Most commonly chipotles are found canned in adobo sauce but they may also be dried and made into a powder similar to chili powder.

I prefer to use the powder in this recipe versus the canned chipotles. You don’t need much of either to make this dip and it’s easier to keep the powder for future use than splitting up the canned chipotles and freezing them.

🛒 Ingredients You Need

Making Greek yogurt chipotle sauce requires just three ingredients. You might even already have them in your kitchen. Here’s what you need:

Easy Creamy Chipotle Yogurt Sauce Recipe (3 Ingredients) (2)
  • Greek Yogurt: The creamy dense texture of this yogurt works better than plain yogurt. Even better it gives you a bit of a protein boost along with some probiotics. It is an all-around nice alternative to sour cream or mayonnaise.
  • Chipotle Chili Powder: An easy to find seasoning for this delicious chipotle Greek yogurt sauce. Don’t worry about buying it and never using it again, it’s great added to tacos and soups. It’s easy to find in most grocery stores or you an order it online.
  • Lime Juice: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor!

🔀 Easy Substitutions

  • Greek yogurt: You can also use sour cream to make creamy chipotle sauce if you don’t have the Greek-style yogurt. The sour cream makes a much more dense, thick sauce without as much tanginess as the yogurt.
  • Chipotle chili powder: If you prefer to use the canned chipotles I suggest starting with half to one whole chipotle and a touch of adobo sauce. I suggest mixing the sauce in a blender or food processor to puree the chipotles into the yogurt.

Can I Make a Vegan Chipotle Sauce?

If you want to make this vegan version of this smoky sauce, you definitely can!

I suggest using a homemade or store-bought plain cashew cream instead of vegan yogurt. I find most vegan yogurts have an off flavor that may taste strange in this preparation.

🥣 How to Make Creamy Chipotle Sauce

This dip takes no more than five minutes to mix up! Maybe even less!

  1. Combine the Greek yogurt, chipotle chili powder, and lime juice in a small bowl.
  1. Use a whisk to mix them together and add salt and pepper to taste.

  1. Transfer it to a serving bowl or store it in a jar in the fridge.

PRO TIP: If serving for a dinner party or gathering, use a bit of lime zest and more chipotle chili powder to sprinkle over the top of the chipotle southwest sauce for a little garnish.

How to Serve

This chipotle Greek yogurt sauce is definitely one with many uses making it the perfect addition to your regular meal prep rotation.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to use this spicy sauce in my meals.

  • The perfect dip for chips or fries! Use it with crispy plantain chips or oven-baked french fries!
  • Serve it up with vegetarian tacos made with beef tofu crumbles.
  • It’s a great sauce to serve with vegetarian nachos, tofu fish tacos, or burritos.
  • Use this smoky chipotle sauce as a sandwich spread for black bean burgers or southwest veggie wrap.
  • Use it in your weekly meal prep for grain bowls, burrito bowls, and taco salads!

💭 Expert Tips

  • Use Greek yogurt for the best consistency. Plain yogurt is not thick and creamy enough.
  • Feel free to adjust the amount of chipotle chili powder to make it more or less spicy!
  • Use fresh lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Store leftover sauce in an airtight container or a small jar in the fridge for up to seven days.
  • Do not store it in the freezer. The texture of dairy tends to change after freezing.

FAQs

Is spicy food good for you?

It can be! Adding spiciness is an easy way to add flavor and boost the satiety of food without adding in more unhealthy ingredients.
Almost all chili peppers include capsaicin, the plant compound which makes them spicy and flavorful and is the root of their health benefits.

It’s too thick. How can I make the consistency thinner?

Add some milk or water to the chipotle yogurt sauce until it reaches the desired consistency.

It’s too spicy after I’ve mixed everything together, how can I make it less spicy?

You can add some more lime juice to help cut the spiciness or simply mix in more yogurt to make it less spicy. If you don’t have any more yogurt to add, mix in a touch of agave or maple syrup. The sweetness will help to cut the spicy flavor.
