This Crock-Pot Split Pea Soup recipe is enhanced by the addition of sherry and ham.

Whenever we have ham, I save the ham bone and freeze it. What looks like trash to some people is the perfect flavoring for Split Pea Soup. You would be surprised at how much meat is actually on that ham bone. This is a frugal meal; the most expensive part of this dinner is the bag of .99 cent dried split peas.

My husband introduced me to the idea of adding sherry to split pea soup. While the alcohol in the cooking sherry cooks off it adds a rich flavor to the soup.

We prefer our split pea soup to be smooth and creamy, so I use an immersion blender to blend the soup before serving.

It is nice to time meals for when you want to serve them, so I have listed 3 different cook times for making split pea soup in a slow cooker. Which version I use depends on when I remember to start dinner. 🙂

Crock Pot Split Pea Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound bag of dried split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 stalks of celery, sliced
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons parsley
  • 2 teaspoons basil
  • 2 teaspoons marjoram
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • 5 – 6 cups water
  • ½ cup sherry (optional)

Directions:

Fastest Version:

  1. Put the peas in a large pot over a high heat and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and put a lid on the pot. Let sit for one hour.
  2. Drain peas and place them in the crockpot. Add all of the other ingredients, using only 5 cups of water. Place lid on crockpot, and cook on high for 4 hours.
  3. Remove the meat from the bone and discard the bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.

Fast Version:

  1. Fill the glass bowl with 6 cups of water and microwave on high for 5 minutes or until it is boiling.
  2. Put all ingredients in crockpot. Pour hot water over them. Place the lid on crockpot and cook on high for 5 hours.
  3. Remove the meat from the bone and discard the bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.

Slow version:

  1. Place all ingredients in crockpot including 6 cups of hot tap water. Place lid on crockpot and cook on low for 8 hours.
  2. Remove the meat from the bone and discard the bone. You can mash the peas, spoon them into the blender, or use an immersion blender to make the soup creamier.
